The Story Behind The Open Podcast
The Open Notes Podcast began with a simple question: What can you actually do with a sociology degree?
Angela Thompson launched the podcast to highlight the many paths sociologists take and to help students and curious listeners understand how sociological thinking applies to real careers and real lives.
In the early stages, the team explored a wide range of possible podcast concepts and names—UITAC Talks, Scholar Talks, Off Schedule, Mind Mingle, On the Same Wavelength, Scholar Ponder Spot, U Talk?, UI TAC?, Social Scholar, and You Are Scholarly. One favorite was Off Schedule, reflecting the idea of speaking with scholars outside of their formal academic roles.
Ultimately, the team chose Open Notes. The name reflects the spirit of the podcast: open, thoughtful conversations where hosts and listeners take notes on the experiences, insights, and journeys of each guest. Every episode becomes a chance to learn not just about sociology, but about the people who bring it to life.
